The largest companies of Australia greatly impact the country’s economy, the dynamism of the region and beyond. The thirty largest publicly traded Australian companies, top constituents of the ASX 200 index, are detailed with their activities, logos, and useful links.

ASX logo365体育网站In Australia, companies are incorporated as public limited companies to get listed on the Australian Securities Exchange – ASX. Even though they have to comply with the regulations of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, getting listed allows companies to gain access to capital from investors in exchange for a share of the company’s stock.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index

365体育网站To easily grasp the fluctuations of the Australian economy and its stock market, the stocks of 200 companies quoted on the ASX are aggregated in the S&P/ASX 200 Index, or more simply ASX 200, which is widely considered as the benchmark index of Australia.

Calculated from the stocks of the 200 largest corporations by market capitalization listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, the ASX 200 is a capitalization-weighted index, i.e. in which larger companies are weighted more heavily. It represents around 82% of the total market capitalization on the ASX.

To help you learn more about Australian corporations, the 30 largest companies in the Australian Securities Exchange, and the ASX 200 index, are listed hereafter. Each company is presented with information on its sector and industry, operations, market capitalization, a direct link to its website, logo and stock symbol. Companies are ranked by market capitalization in Australian Dollars as of the effective close on Friday, February 7, 2020.

Remark that in order to make this list follow the indices that focus on the largest Australian companies, such as the ASX 50 and ASX 20, we have not included companies that are not listed primarily on the Australian Securities Exchange. Two of the larger companies in the ASX 200 index are therefore not in the following list, namely Resmed Inc, a US medical instruments & supplies company and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, a French real estate investment trust focusing on retail properties.
